Donald Trump's remarks about retaking control of a key U.S. military base in Afghanistan has faced opposition from senior officials in Kabul.

A diplomat said on social media that the two countries need to engage with one another without the U.S. maintaining any military presence in any part of Afghanistan.

The U.S. President recently floated the idea of reclaiming the Bagram Air Base amid concerns of China's influence in the region.

Trump said the U.S. "should have never given it up," taking aim at the Biden administration's fraught withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

The Bagram Air Base, 50 kilometres north of Kabul, had been a crucial hub used by American forces for years before the attacks of September 11th, 2021 which paved the way for Taliban's takeover.

The foreign ministry in Beijing on Friday warned it's "unpopular" to stir up tension in Afghanistan, with respect for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
