Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) officers from the police have successfully cleared the wartime bomb in Quarry Bay, officers said on Saturday early afternoon.
They worked through the night at the site where a wartime bomb was discovered on Pan Hoi Street in Quarry Bay.
EOD officers conducted a detonation at around 11:30 PM. Black smoke was seen billowing from Pan Hoi Street around noon, drifting across the hillside on the opposite side of the road.
Before the detonation, police cordoned off the area and evacuated residents.
The location where the wartime bomb was discovered is at 16-22 Pan Hoi Street in Quarry Bay, a redevelopment site.
After receiving a report at around noon yesterday, police arrived at the scene and gradually expanded the blockade. That evening, authorities urgently evacuated 18 nearby buildings, involving approximately 1,900 households and 6,000 people.
The bomb disposal experts worked all night to defused the bomb. It is understood that the bomb casing was sawed open this morning.
The police plan to continue with their traditional method of handling such bombs: first cut the bomb open and then burn the explosives inside until they are completely consumed.
A large number of officers wore bulletproof helmets and piled sandbags or water-filled sandbags to reduce the spread of explosive fragments and lower the temperature near the bomb.
