Two women suffered septic shock after undergoing infusion treatments at a cosmetic clinic in Central.

David Lam, a lawmaker from the medical field suspects the incident may involve criminal acts, stressing that intravenous injections have to be performed by trained personnel under doctor's prescription.

The Department of Health said it instructed the person-in-charge of the clinic to immediately cease providing such high-risk medical services and to contact its patrons who received infusion treatments to follow up on their health condition.

The duo, both aged 57, visited the clinic "Bioscor Hong Kong" where they received infusion treatments, purportedly containing Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, or NMN.

They developed chills shortly after the dosages, followed by fever and vomiting. Both are now in stable condition but remain hospitalised.

NMN is a vitamin B3 derivative naturally found in human bodies and food. It is supposed to have anti-ageing effects.

Dr. Chung Parr Hall noted NMN injections are not as popular in Hong Kong as it is in Taiwan, and there had not been data to prove its medical efficacy.

He estimated that the two patients were infected by bacteria in the product. Chung said that issue with improper storage or the injection's production process can lead to severe side effects.

In 2013, the government stipulated that all medical treatments that involve injections can only be operated by registered medical practitioners.

Lawmaker representing the medical sector Dr. David Lam suspects the incident may involve criminal acts, given that NMN is not a licensed drug in Hong Kong.

Apart from infection, Lam pointed out that improper injection also carry other risks and could lead to death if excessive air or rigid substances were injected.
