Strong Wind Signal No. 3 in force

The observatory issued the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 9:20 a.m.

In the past few hours, Severe Tropical Storm Mitag continues to move across the northern part of the South China Sea, edging closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong.

The No. 3 signal will remain in force during the most of the daytime today.

According to the present forecast, Mitag will make landfall over the coast of eastern Guangdong around this evening.

Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, Mitag will turn to a westerly track, skirting Hong Kong at about 100 kilometres to the north but weakening gradually.

Depending on the rate of the weakening of Mitag at that time, the distance of its gale-force winds from Hong Kong and the change of local wind conditions, the observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals tonight.
