Israeli forces pressed on with a new ground offensive in Gaza City as strikes overnight across the Palestinian territory killed dozens, including women and children.
Hundreds of thousands remained in the city, which is already largely in ruins from two years of bombing. The latest Israeli operation further escalates the conflict and likely pushes any ceasefire farther out of reach.
The ground invasion of Gaza City has begun. Armed vehicles carrying thousands of troops.
Backed by air power picking off buildings at will with the stated aim of destroying Hamas and freeing the remaining 48 hostages, 20 of them who are still alive.
Apocalyptic scenes of destruction. Officials say around 350,000 Palestinians have left their homes.
Around 200,000 of them are heading south while the rest are moving to another part of the city. Many lack the means to move.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his forces were operating on several fronts, including bombing raids on Yemen.
He said troops in Gaza City are opening additional routes for the faster evacuation of Palestinians to separate them from Hamas fighters.
Netanyahu and Israeli officials earlier hit out at the United Nations after its commission of inquiry declared that a genocide was taking place in Gaza.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Israel's military operation in Gaza City is "intolerable."
"We are seeing massive destruction of neighbourhoods, now the systematic destruction of Gaza City," said Guterres. "We are seeing massive killing of civilians in a way that I do not remember in any conflicts since I am secretary-general. And we are seeing dramatic obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid. The truth is that this is something that it is morally, politically and legally intolerable."
Israel has long accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields, which the Palestinian group denies.
Before leaving for London for his state visit to Britain, U.S. President Donald Trump warned Hamas.
"Well, we're going to see what happens, because I hear Hamas is trying to use the old human shield deal," said Trump. "And if they do that, they're going be in big trouble. They're going to be in big trouble. They put it out two days ago that they're gonna use the hostages as human shields. That's something that hasn't been done for a long time, you know? Let me tell you, if they do that, they're in big trouble."
