The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Standby Signal No. 1 at 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
At 9 p.m., the tropical depression near Luzon was estimated to be about 770 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the northeastern part of the South China Sea. It will intensify gradually in the next couple of days.
The tropical cyclone has a relatively small circulation and will maintain a distance of 400 kilometres from Hong Kong tonight and tomorrow morning.
The Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force before noon tomorrow.
According to the present forecast, the tropical cyclone will edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong on Friday. Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, it will then turn westwards, moving closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. However, there are uncertainties regarding its landfall position and intensity. The observatory will assess the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signals from later tomorrow to Friday.
