China's coast guard accused a Philippine ship of deliberately ramming one of its vessels on Tuesday near Huangyan island in the South China Sea.

The Philippines denied it, claiming Chinese ships used water cannons to damage its ship and injured a crew member.

A Chinese coast guard statement said more than 10 Philippine government vessels entered the waters around the shoal, and one of them rammed a Chinese ship.

The Philippine coast guard counterclaimed that Chinese ships hit a Filipino fisheries vessel with water cannons for nearly 30 minutes, resulting in significant damage to the boat.

The clash came six days after China announced it was designating part of Huangyan Island as a national nature reserve.

The Philippine government filed a diplomatic protest.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Philippines should immediately stop its infringements and provocations and refrain from challenging China's resolve to safeguard its rights.
