The observatory says a tropical cyclone over Luzon will enter within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong later today, requiring the issuance of the Standby Signal No.1 tonight.
The tropical cyclone is expected to move across the northeastern part of the South China Sea in the next few days.
It will intensify gradually and move in the general direction of the coast of eastern Guangdong.
As its circulation is relatively small, it will only bring a significant impact to local weather when it nears the city.
The weather forecaster says it will assess the need to issue higher warning signals later on Thursday and Friday.
Another storm may also affect Hong Kong in the middle of next week and the weather is expected to deteriorate again then.
