Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland will leave the cabinet and take on a new role as Canada's special representative for Ukrainian reconstruction.
The move marks an end to Freeland's 12-year domestic political career. At one point, she was tipped as a potential future prime minister but lost to Carney for the leadership of the ruling Liberal Party in March.
The 57-year-old, who is of Ukrainian descent and speaks the language, helped drive Canada's hardline approach on Russia.
Ottawa imposed a raft of sanctions on Moscow and promised Kyiv billions of dollars in aid.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin banned her from travelling to Russia in retaliation for Western sanctions against Moscow in 2014.
Freeland served as deputy prime minister and finance ministerin former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet.
Her abrupt resignation in December 2024 fuelled an internal revolt that resulted in Trudeau's exit at a time when the Liberals looked like they were headed for defeat in the next election.
