Oscar-winning actor and director Robert Redford has died at the age of 89. The American passed away at his home in Utah surrounded by his family.
Perhaps best known for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," Redford starred in "The Sting", for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and "All the President's Men".
Redford had a Hollywood career that spanned decades becoming one of the Silver screen's most recognisable faces.
He was known for his delivery of iconic lines and film star good looks, although worked hard to play a variety of roles.
He moved into directing and won an Oscar behind the camera for "Ordinary People" in 1981 and had several other box office successes.
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
Redford also championed independent cinema founding the Sundance Film Festival.
He talked about the festival in 2003: "I am an impatient person and I don't believe in wasting time or energy, mine or anybody else's. So, I said look if this doesn't work - when I started the festival in 1985 - if this doesn't work I am not going to hang around pumping it or beating a dead horse. If it does work, then if it ever ceases to service a need, or to be irrelevant that will be the end of that."
