The U.S. Army unveiled its mid-range missile system, Typhon, at one of its bases in Japan for the first time.
In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesperson urged the U.S. and Japan to withdraw the Typhon missile system as soon as possible.
Typhon was displayed on Monday in the U.S. Marine Corps Base in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi prefecture in southwestern Japan during an annual bilateral exercise.
The land-based weapon is capable of firing the Standard Missile-6 and the Tomahawk cruise missiles that can reach China's eastern coasts and parts of Russia.
The two-week drill which started last Thursday features more than 19,000 U.S. and Japanese troops.
Japanese public television NHK reports that the U.S. Army is not expected to fire Typhon or other advanced missile systems during the exercise.
Today, the Chinese Foreign Minstry slammed the U.S. for accelerating the arms race and posing actual threats to regional strategic safety.
