Heavy airstrikes and the start of Israel's ground invasion on Gaza City have killed at least 20 Palestinians.

Israel's defence minister says "Gaza is burning.".

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Qatar, after visiting Israel, having bolstered support for the Israeli offensive.

Meanwhile, a United Nations commission of inquiry says Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Qatar, not long after leaving Israel, the country that hit Qatar's capital, Doha, with airstrikes last week.

Those air raids targeted Hamas leaders as Qatar, Egypt and the US try to mediate a settlement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Yesterday, Egypt's President called Israel "the enemy"in a fiery speech in Qatar.

With Rubio only hours earlier, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not rule out trying to go after Hamas readers on foreign soil again.

Rubio left Tel Aviv, having showed US support for Israel's war expansion,as Netanyahu confirmed a "powerful operation" was now underway in Hamas's last stronghold.

WIth Rubio in the air on his way to Qatar, Israeli bombs continued dropping from the sky over Gaza.

Officials say scores of Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours,as Israel ramps up attacks on Gaza City with a full ground offensive.

Buildings were destroyed as Israel hunts Hamas militants and tells civilians to leave the city.

As Israel takes over the largest urban area,Rubio says the window for any negotiated settlement is closing.

Rubio, saying while still in Israel, "Our number one choice is that this ends through a negotiated settlement where Hamas says, we're gonna demilitarise, we're no longer gonna pose a threat, we're going to disband, we're to release every single hostage. By the way, there shouldn't be a single hostage! If you want to fight a war, you fight wars between combatants. You don't fight wars by taking civilians as human shields.

Israel says the only way to get the hostages back is to pressure Hamas on the battlefield.

Some families of hostages disagree.

This determined group say they'll camp outside Netanyahu's house until the hostages are brought home.

The mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, Einav, shouted at an upstairs window.asking Netanyahu's wife, Sara, to deliver on what she'd promised.

"Come out, You lied. You told me you were going to bring everyone home," Einav yells. "You tell the families complete nonsense. Enough!."

Later, Prime Minister Netanyahu in court for his corruption trial.

Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli leader to take the stand as a criminal defendant.

Answering to charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes which he denies.

His government accused of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza by a UN-backed inquiry.

An independent commission found grounds to conclude four of the five genocidal acts defined in international law had been carried out by "Israeli authorities and its security forces."

Chair of the Commission Navi PIllay says : "One, killing members of the Group; 2, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; 3. deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part and 4, imposing measures intended to prevent births."

Israel rejects what it called a "distorted" report as the authors called for the international community to stop it and punish this responsible.
