Israel's Prime Minister says he's getting the U.S. assurances he seeks ahead of a U.N. debate on a Palestinian state.
Benjamin Netanyahu says there is no better reflection of the relationship than U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visiting Jerusalem.
"Your presence here in Israel today is a clear message that America stands with Israel", Netanyahu said at a joint briefing.
"You stand with us in the face of terror, in the face of the incredible, I would almost say Middle Age lies, Middle Ages lies that are directed against us, the rising anti-Semitism in the world and the, really the weak governments that are putting pressures on us."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded: "Every single hostage, both living and deceased, needs to be home immediately. Hamas can no longer continue to exist as an armed element that threatens the peace and security, not just of Israel, but of the world, and that the people of Gaza deserve a better future one that cannot begin until Hamas is eliminated and until all of the hostages, both living and deceased, are home."
Aid workers say there's a spike in the exodus from Gaza City as Israel continues its offensive there.
Huge numbers seen on the coastal road heading south to Israeli-prescribed safe zones creating a one-way stream stretching back miles.
The United Nations warns many still in the urban area, especially large families, cannot leave because of high transport costs and worry this massive influx into the south could further worsen the humanitarian crisis.
