Macao's legislative election concludes with voter turnout at 53.35 percent

The 2025 Macao Legislative Assembly Election has concluded.
Voter turnout for direct elections reached 53.35 percent.
Just before polls closed at 9 p.m., some voters rushed to a station in Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion to cast their ballots.
Vote counting then took place at all polling stations.
Election results are expected to be announced during the early hours of Monday.
This is the first election held after last year's electoral reform that implements the principle of "patriots administering Macao."
In direct elections involving voters from the public, 71 candidates are competing for 14 seats.
For indirect elections for voters from professional sectors, 14 candidates are contesting 12 places.
The 33-seat Legislative Assembly will eventually be formed with the chief executive of Macao appointing legislators to the remaining seven seats.
This resident says employment is the top concern among youngsters, adding that many graduates failed to secure jobs in recent days.
This man called voting a duty of the citizen and he hopes to make an impact on the city's economy.
The voter turnout for direct elections broke the record since the 1999 handover from Portuguese to Chinese rule in Macao.
Chief executive of Macao Sam Hou-fai also cast his vote.
He said the election marked a new start of the "One Country, Two Systems" under which legislators shoulder essential political responsibilities and must embody the principle of "patriots governing Macao."
Meanwhile, free rides on public buses and light rails were offered in a bid to boost voter turnout.
