U.S. President Donald Trump has urged NATO countries to impose 50 to 100 percent tariffs on China for its purchases of Russian oil as part of a strategy to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He also urged them to stop buying oil from Russia.

Trump posted on social media that NATO's commitment to winning the war has been "less than 100 percent" and the buying of Russian oil by some of them is "shocking." He said it "greatly weakens your negotiating position."

Trump added that placing hefty tariffs on China would withdraw them from the war, which Russia launched in February 2022.

He wrote that "China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia" and powerful tariffs "will break that grip."

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday that China does not participate in wars nor plot them, adding that war cannot solve problems and sanctions only complicate them.
