The government has suspended the policy of prohibiting taxis from entering High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung. The measure was scheduled to be introduced today.

High Island Reservoir East Dam is a popular scenic spot in the city. Taxis are one of the transport options which visitors can take to High Island.

To improve the traffic congestion issue in the area over holiday periods, sources say the government had planned to issue a ban, starting from today, on taxis entering the area between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends, public holidays and mainland's Golden Week.

But the policy has been suspended after opposition arises from the taxi sector.

Several visitors said the ban would create inconvenience for tourists because they are less familiar with local transport options.

This taxi driver, meanwhile, thinks they cannot do much about the policy if people complain about inconvenience brought by traffic congestion. He added that taxi drivers are here to serve members of the public.

Lawmaker Stanley Li said the government would suspend the policy until at least October 1st -- the national day holiday.

He said authorities and taxi sector's representatives will come together on the day to inspect the area's traffic situation before making a decision.
