The President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Zhang Xiang, explains what the university is doing to facilitate the expected increase in overseas students. He also gave an update on developments in the medical school.

In the latest QS World University Rankings, the University of Hong Kong ranks 11th globally and first within China. HKU's President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Zhang Xiang told TVB News that, in addition to its ranking, geopolitical pressures are also influencing international students to consider Asia, with the University of Hong Kong emerging as a top choice.

"Since the end of covid we have received applications from over 150 countries, many of the countries we usually don't get... from East Africa or Latvia, East Europe," said Zhang. "Our selectivity of the top student now is comparable to the really top schools in US right now. We are building six dormitories or student halls to meet that challenge, and we already completed four and two more are to be completed in next 10 or 12 months."

Meanwhile, HKU's medical school has 25 students for its new four-year, full-time Graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme.

With the government planning to establish a third medical school, Zhang acknowledged that although there will be competition for resources, he welcomes collaboration that will enhance quality.

"If we look at the pie of the Hong Kong only, of course, this is rather limited," he said. "But we should open ourselves to collaborations across the globe. We will rise up through these competitions."

Zhang has faced governance challenges in his past seven years in the university. He said that the university has turned a new page and will enhance communication and engagement in the future.
