The United States is marking the 24th anniversary of the deadly attacks in New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania that killed almost 3,000 people.

The attacks, blamed on Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda group, brought down the iconic Twin Towers in New York.

In a rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a ceremony honored the victims of Flight 93, the hijacked plane that crashed after crew members and passengers tried to storm the cockpit.

Bells were rung in honour of the victims and their families. The attacks reverberated globally, altering the course of U.S. foreign and domestic policy.

It led to the "Global War on Terrorism" and the U.S.-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and related conflicts that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and troops.

President Donald Trump paid tribute at a New York Yankees baseball game on Thursday night.
