Police recorded over 24,000 fraud cases involving HK$4.34 bil. from January to July

From January to July this year, the Police recorded 24,644 fraud cases, a slight increase of 1% compared to the same period last year, resulting in total losses of HK$4.34 billion. One mainland master's student was defrauded of over HK$10 million.

Among the fraud cases, 957 post-secondary students were victims, 65% of whom were local students and 35% were mainland students.

The largest loss occurred in a mainland master's student studying in Hong Kong.

In April this year, the victim received a call from a scammer impersonating a police officer, accusing him of involvement in a financial fraud and demanded that he pay a security deposit.

The victim subsequently transferred a total of HK$10.97 million in six transactions.
