European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Russia's violation of Polish airspace with drones shows that Moscow is escalating its war with Ukraine and not trying to end it.

Polish airspace has been violated many times since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but never on this scale.

Meanwhile, a small village in Poland where one of the drones hit is in the spotlight.

Police cordon off the area in the village of Wyryki, in Poland's Lublin region near the Ukrainian border.

Villagers in this sleepy town say they heard loud explosions on Wednesday, which authorities say was a Russian drone hitting a house.

Alicja Wesolowska, a resident of the house that was hit, said it was completely destroyed.

We heard a bang, there was no roof, everything was destroyed, she said. There is a hole, everything is broken, there's no bedroom, nothing.

Authorities said more than 10 objects crossed into Polish airspace, with the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force, acting on behalf of NATO, shooting them down.

Russia, which regularly sends hundreds of drones into Ukraine, said it did not target Poland.

Belarus, from where Poland said some of the drones originated, said it warned Warsaw and suggested some of them "lost their course."

Officials say it is the first time NATO has had to act to defend the airspace of one of its members.

The violation drew immediate condemnation from a number of countries, drawing grave concern from the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"The incident, which reportedly took place during another large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, again underlines the regional impact and real risk of expansion of this devastating conflict," said Guterres' spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. "There is an urgent need for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire and for a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in Ukraine."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejects Russia's claims that they did not target Poland.

Russian activity was calculated, said Zelenskyy, before calling on European forces to come together and provide protection.

U.S. President Donald Trump's reaction was so far muted, asking on social media: "What's with Russia violating Poland's airspace with drones? Here we go!" Trump was reportedly due to speak with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

Canada hit out at the Russian attacks.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said: "And Canada stands with Poland and all NATO allies in upholding the NATO Treaty, in the articles I mentioned, but also international law, which is based on the concept of sovereignty of states and territorial integrity."
