China's internet regulator gives warning to Xiaohongshu over celebrity gossips

China's internet regulator said it had issued warnings to popular Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, or RedNote.

This after the authorities criticised the app for regularly hyping up trivial content about celebrities. 

Often known as China's Instagram, the Shanghai-based social media platform Xiaohongshu, or RedNote, was established in 2013.

The platform allows users to share titbits about their daily lives. 

As of last year, more than 300 million people in China and around the world were active users. 

In addition to topics like weather, travel and food, posts about celebrities have also become a hot trend.

In a statement, the Cyberspace Administration of China accused Xiaohongshu of failing to fulfil its main responsibility of content management, resulting in many posts that hype up celebrities' personal life and trivial matters, which are deemed unhealthy but often top the search lists. 

Criticising the platform for "damaging the ecology of the internet," the government body said it had instructed the Shanghai Cyberspace Administration to issue warnings and order the platform to rectify the situation before a deadline. 

Responsible persons at Xiaohongshu will face strict punishment if they fail to comply with the order.

Back in 2021, the Cyberspace Administration of China vowed to strictly regulate content about celebrities, saying fan culture was against mainstream values. 

Lui Hon-kwong, a business academic at Lingnan University, said celebrities have a significant impact on social media, and their posts should be regulated to ensure their content was accurate. 

He added social media platforms should proactively monitor their posts.
