Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on global and regional issues as a continuation of their discussions in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.
They highlighted the need to further leverage the strategic leading role of head-of-state diplomacy and explore practical cooperation.
Wednesday's phone call was the latest interaction between Chinese and U.S. top officials after defence chief Dong Jun spoke with his counterpart Pete Hegseth.
Wang said while China and the U.S. once fought side by side to defeat militarism and fascism during the Second World War, they should work together in the new era for world peace and prosperity and tackle global challenges.
Wang also urged Washington to exercise caution on issues regarding Taiwan. He pointed to its recent "negative words and deeds" which he says have undermined China's legitimate rights and interests, and meddled in China's internal affairs.
The U.S. State Department said Rubio stressed the significance of "open and constructive communication on a range of bilateral issues."
The two diplomats met face-to-face in July on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Malaysia.
