Hong Kong has entered the summer flu season, with at least five severe cases involving children being recorded so far this month. Multiple schools have reported flu outbreaks.
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau has urged parents to arrange vaccinations for their children.
After monitoring influenza trends over the last two weeks, the Centre for Health Protection determined that the city has entered the summer flu season.
Since the start of the new school term, 95 students and three teachers of this secondary school in Tuen Mun have come down with flu.
This student says nearly half of his class caught the flu while he was also ill a few days ago and was absent from school.
This student just recovered from influenza A and had a high temperature.
This parent says he bought a disinfectant spray for his son to sanitise his seat, just like during the COVID pandemic.
The Centre for Health Protection advised schools to implement infection control measures, such as recommending students to wear masks, opening windows to improve ventilation, and thoroughly cleaning the school compound.
There have also been flu outbreaks in schools in Deep Water Bay, Yau Ma Tei and Tai Po.
Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau stressed the importance of vaccination.
He said even though some schools are not taking part in the outreach vaccination programme, parents can still arrange vaccination for their children at private clinics.
The 2025/26 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programmes will commence on September 25th.
Twenty-three schools have said they will not join the programme, citing reasons such as insufficient facilities and manpower.
Dr. Joseph Tsang from the Hong Kong Medical Association suggested that district councillors arrange mobile vaccination vehicles to provide flu shots for students.
