Two years ago, the government proposed requiring commercial vehicle drivers aged 65 and over to submit annual body check certifications in order to renew their driving licences.

This, instead of doing so at 70 years old as is required of other drivers.

But the proposal has stalled.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said the government is targeting the implementation of the policy in the second quarter of next year.

The transport chief said an expert team is analysing the views of various stakeholders.

She said driver representatives suggested reducing the frequency of the body checks while there are views that assessments of driver's reflexes are needed.

She added the authorities would invite members of the commercial vehicle industry to participate in medical assessment trials during the fourth quarter of this year.
