Palestinian group Hamas says its top leaders survived Tuesday's Israeli airstrike on Qatar.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel's decision to attack Qatar was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and his administration received warning of the strike just before it took place.

He added that a unilateral attack on Qatar does not serve American or Israeli interests.

Israel struck the headquarters of Hamas' political leadership in Qatar's capital, Doha, as the group's top figures gathered to consider a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza.

None of the leaders who had gathered there to consider a U.S. peace proposal were killed, but Hamas said at least five lower-level members were, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, the Hamas leader for Gaza and top negotiator.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he was not thrilled by the Israeli attack.

(Reporter:) Mr. President, about the Israeli strike earlier today.

U.S. President Donald Trump said "Well, I'm not thrilled, I'm not thrilled about it. I'm not thrilled about the whole situation. It's not a good situation. But I will say this, we want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down today."

China's foreign ministry condemned the Israeli attack on Doha, saying Beijing firmly opposes Israel's violation of Qatar's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

And Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said his country too strongly condemns Israel's attack on Qatar and called it an interference on the ongoing diplomatic efforts towards achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.

Qatari Prime Minister and Minster of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Qatar "will respond firmly to any reckless breach or attack that threatens its security and the stability of the region."

Jon Gambrell from The Associated Press said: "Israel is insisting that it carried out this attack on its own, likely because it's starting to hear some criticism from the White House over this strike. Now, the Trump administration says that it warned the Qataris ahead of time. The Qataris are saying that warning came even as the explosions were being heard here in Doha."

Meanwhile, another night of Israeli strikes on Gaza City as Israel's military had warned Gazans to evacuate the city ahead of its planned offensive there.

Some Palestinians packed up their belongings and left while others lacked the money to get out and some refused to leave their homes.

This displaced man said: "They dropped leaflets on us three or four times. They told us to leave the Gaza Strip and go to a safe zone. There is no safe zone in Gaza. From north to west to south. There is no safe zone. Danger is everywhere."
