The 10th Belt and Road Summit opened at the Convention and Exhibition Centre today.

Chief Executive John Lee said Hong Kong is the ideal place for doing business under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Meanwhile, a central government official said Beijing is looking into setting up a free trade region involving the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.

More than 6,000 political leaders and business representatives are taking part in the two-day Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong. The city's Chief Executive John Lee delivered the opening speech.

JOHN LEE, Chief Executive: "Our external trade with Belt and Road countries exceeded 276 billion U.S. dollars last year, up about 80 percent since 2013. Some 1,400 companies from Belt and Road countries have established a base in Hong Kong to seize these opportunities."

The SAR concluded nine memorandums of understanding, or MOUs, and cooperation agreements with Belt and Road countries, covering collaboration in areas such as customs and anti-corruption.

JOHN LEE: "Hong Kong's success as a premier functional platform for the Belt and Road rests on our unique 'One Country, Two Systems' framework. It allows Hong Kong to maintain a common law jurisdiction and a judiciary that exercises its powers independently, providing the safeguards that investors and projects demand."

Beijing's Vice Minister of Commerce Yan Dong also attended the event. He said the central government is looking into the possibility of setting up a free trade region involving the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao to boost sectors such as finance, telecom and tourism.

The summit also features an exhibition covering five distinct zones. For instance, the InnoTech Zone displays cutting-edge innovation and AI.
