Nepali Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli has resigned, a day after violent crackdown on protesters saw 19 people killed and 145 wounded.

President Ram Chandra Poudel accepted the resignation and appointed Oli to head a caretaker government for the time being.

73-year-old Oli quit shortly following the resignation of three of his ministers.

He wrote in a letter to the president that he hoped it would help towards "a political solution and resolution of the problems."

Protestors reportedly broke into the Parliament building and set it on fire in the wake of Oli's departure.

Massive rallies led by mostly young adults against the government's ban on unregistered social media led to Monday's deadly clashes with police that killed at least 19.

Although Nepali authorities have lifted the short-lived social media ban and restored the apps' services, protests in Kathmandu escalated into broader criticism over corruption.
