President Xi Jinping renewed his calls for cementing multilateralism and defending international fairness and justice at a virtual BRICS summit with other leaders.

He said the tariff war waged by certain countries is seriously detrimental to global trade rules.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio da Silva, who hosted the meeting, said tariff is being turned into a tool to interfere into other countries' internal affairs.

President Xi attended the BRICS' Leaders Virtual Meeting via video link from Beijing on Monday night.

Speaking at the event, Xi urged member states of the bloc - including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - to take a united stand against hegemonism.

He said some nations consecutively started a trade and tariff war that undermined global trade rules without naming the U.S. directly.

It is a "critical juncture" for countries to act as the vanguard of the Global South and jointly defend multilaterlism on the BRICS Spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation.

The Chinese president put forward three proposals.

He first called on BRICS countries to uphold multilateralism and defend international fairness and justice.

Xi reintroduced his Gobal Governance Initiative, aimed at creating a more just and equitable international governance system.

The system should be centred on the United Nations and the international order based on international law.

His second proposal is to promote openness and win-win cooperation in a bid to safeguard the international economic and trade order.

Protectionism of any form must be resisted, he said, adding that Global South countries should participate in economic globalisation as equals and share in the fruits of development.

Xi further highlighted solidarity among the bloc, which account for nearly half of the world's population and 30 percent of global economic output.

He said the more closely they cooperate, the more resilient, resourceful and effective they are in tackling external risks and challenges.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who joined the meeting from Sochi, took part in discussions about BRICS' consolidated response in trade, economy, finance, investment and other areas amid headwinds of U.S. tariffs and sanctions.

Meanwhile, Brazil's Lula contended the group is synonymous with the defense of multilateralism, saying "Tariff blackmail is becoming normalised as a tool to conquer markets and interfere in domestic affairs."

He said enhancing trade cooperation could help alleviate the impact of protectionism.
