President Xi Jinping has urged BRICS members to safeguard the multilateral trading system centred on the World Trade Organization and resist all forms of protectionism.
The Chinese leader was attending the bloc's leaders meeting hosted by Brazil via video link, with U.S. tariffs and global trade rules high on the agenda.
In an address, he made a rallying call for member states to tap into their strengths to achieve cooperative results in trade, economy, finance and technology.
Xi said the closer the countries work together, "the more confidence, options, and effective results they will have in addressing external risks and challenges," and that solidarity is needed to foster synergy for common development.
He further noted they should actively promote greater democracy in international relations, increase representation and the voices of Global South countries on the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation.
