In Nigeria, the jihadist group Boko Haram killed more than 60 people in an overnight assault on a village in the northeast of the country.
The militants attacked homes of residents who had recently returned following years of displacement.
The governor of Borno state visited the community late Saturday where 60 people reportedly died during the attack.
He said the "numerical strength of the Nigerian army is not enough to contain the situation."
He added that authorities have started training forest guards and hope to deploy them soon.
The conflict has spilled over into Nigeria's northern neighbouring countries including Niger, resulting in the death of around 35,000 civilians and the displacement of more than 2 million others, according to the United Nations.
