The No. 8 South East Gale or Storm Signal is in effect and will remain in force at least until 11 a.m. on Monday. The Observatory says the chance of issuing higher tropical warning signals remains low.
Trees were swaying under the wind. Some passersby used umbrellas to shield themselves against the rain and strong wind. But they were unsuccessful.
This man was not affected by Severe Tropical Storm Tapah as he continued to run in the rain.
At 11 p.m., Tapah was centred about 250 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong.
It is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 18 kilometres an hour, edging closer to the coast of western Guangdong. Tapah will skirt within 200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong around early Monday morning.
The observatory says flooding may occur over parts of the low-lying areas.
At one of the typhoon blackspots -- Heng Fa Chuen -- floodgates are installed.
The sea becomes rough.
Some residents stuck "X" on windows with duct-tape to prevent the glass from shattering.
In Lei Yue Mun, meanwhile, sandbags are placed outside shops to prevent flooding.
The observatory says winds are expected to strengthen further on Monday morning. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
