By-elections for the Election Committee subsectors were held today.

The voter turnout reached 97.3 percent, and no election-related complaints have been received so far.

The five ordinary polling stations, including this one at the Central Library, opened at 9 a.m.

Voters arrived steadily to cast their ballots, despite the intermittent heavy downpours near the polling stations.

Mr. Cheng said it was quite troublesome coming over in the rain because he got soaked, but he left home a bit early, calling voting a duty that he wanted to fulfil as soon as possible.

Another voter, Mr. Yu, shared that his criteria for voting are that the candidate must serve the people of Hong Kong and uphold order, adding that everyone should understand that the nation is very important.

Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang and Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak, both visited the polling station to inspect the proceedings.

In this by-election for the Election Committee subsectors, there were a total of 93 vacancies to be filled.

Seventy-two seats across 22 subsectors were uncontested, leaving only 21 positions requiring a vote, involving six subsectors and a total of 28 candidates.

Approximately, 3,600 registered voters or their authorised representatives went to their assigned polling stations to vote.

Among them, the voter turnout in the Commercial (Third) subsector and the Technology and Innovation subsector reached 100 percent at 1 p.m. with a total of 155 people having cast their votes.

The chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr. Justice David Lok, stated that order was generally good at all polling stations.

The voting period ended at 6 p.m., after which all ballot boxes were transported to the central counting station at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

The elected members, together with the rest of the 1,500 Election Committee members, will be responsible for nominating candidates in the Legislative Council election to be held in December and for electing the 40 lawmakers of the Election Committee constituency.

Additionally, the functions of Election Committee members include nominating candidates for the Chief Executive election and electing the Chief Executive.
