A snapped traction cable may be the cause of a streetcar accident in the Portuguese capital Lisbon that killed 16 people on Wednesday. That's according to experts who have spoken to Reuters.

Portuguese authorities are still investigating the incident, saying the probe may take up to six weeks.

Locals and tourists placed floral tributes near the site of the deadly derailment that also injured 21 others.

Police said that 11 of those killed were foreigners: three Britons, two South Koreans, two Canadians, and one each from France, Switzerland, Ukraine and the U.S.

The traction cable helps the streetcar maintain a safe speed. If it had snapped, the car would have taken a bend too fast and toppled over.

A key tourist attraction in Lisbon, foreigners and locals continue to use the streetcars days after the accident.
