Thailand's king today endorsed Anutin Charnvirakul as the country's new prime minister.
The King's royal command appointing Anutin was read out in a ceremony at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.
This after Anutin received majority support in a parliamentary vote on Friday after the dismissal of former leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
The royal endorsement paves the way for cabinet formation and a policy address to the parliament, a formality required for the new government to officially assume office.
Anutin's rout of rival contender Chaikasem Nitisiri on Friday was a humiliation for the ruling Pheu Thai party, the populist juggernaut of influential billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra.
Thaksin left Thailand late on Thursday for Dubai, where he spent the bulk of his 15 years of self-imposed exile.
