Mainland star Xin Zhilei won the Best Actress award Saturday night at the 82nd Venice Film Festival for her role in "The Sun Rises on Us All."
The win brings Xin major recognition in Europe for the first time, ending a 14-year gap since another Chinese-language actress claimed the Golden Lion title.
The Alexander Payne-led international jury named 39-year-old Xin Zhilei best actress for her role in "The Sun Rises on Us All," or "Ri Gua Zhong Tian."
The film, directed by Cai Shangjun, portrays a tragic romance about sacrifice and redemption set in the world of sweatshops in Guangzhou.
Xin accepted the trophy from Chinese actress Zhao Tao, who is a member of the jury.
Xin said that when she was a rookie actress a decade ago, she would dream about one day standing on the world-class stage. She said many laughed at her, but she's finally here today.
Xin also encouraged young girls to imagine and go after their dreams, "you never know, it might just come true."
Born and raised in Hegang, Heilongjiang Province, Xin graduated from the Central Academy of China and first rose to fame in cinema in "Crosscurrent" at the Berlinale film festival in 2016.
She starred in several hit TV dramas including "Blossoms Shanghai" by Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai, "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace," and "Joy of Life."
In 2011, Hong Kong actress Ip Tak-han won Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival.
Gong Li received the same title with Zhang Yimou's "The Story of Qiu Ju" in 1992.
