Hong Kong to issue T8 signal on Sunday night as Tropical Cyclone Tapah nears

The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 is now in force, but it will be replaced by the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 at 9:20 tonight.

This as Tropical Storm Tapah edges closer to the coast of western Guangdong.

The observatory expects the No. 8 signal to remain in effect at least until 11 a.m. tomorrow, and the Education Bureau has announced classes of all day schools will be suspended tomorrow. 

Calm before the storm

This morning, a group of foreign domestic helpers gathered along the Central harbourfront to perform a mass dance on their day-off.

Lisa said, "Even the weather is bad, we enjoy every moment, every hour, and every day. Because later on when we go back to our homework and employers, we have to do our assignment again, our household chores. So let's just enjoy even the weather is bad."

At around 11, dense clouds in the sky and there were showers. 

But the poor weather did not stop this resident from going ahead with his jogging exercise.

Bryan said, "It is just water. God made it. The chance of getting hit by lightning is very low, so I don't really worry about that. And if I do get hit by lightning, I won a lottery, I got a nice story out of it."

Rough seas forced the suspension of a number of ferry services. 

Tourist Abhishek said, "Today we had plans to go to Lamma Island but because of this weather we can't go anymore. At the same time, we can take an umbrella and consider a walk. My alternative plan is to go on the city, maybe check out some shopping malls, indoors, go for a massage, and do some shopping."

As Tropical Storm Tapah edges closer to the city this afternoon, sea waves could be seen smashing against the shoreline in Heng Fa Chuen.

Glass doors of a shopping mall nearby were masked with tape in the shape of an X.

Meanwhile, residents also taped their windows to reduce any possible damage.

According to the observatory, local winds will further strengthen tonight.

Shum Chi-tai,.Acting Senior Scientific Officer said, "According to the present forecast, Tapah will intensify further and edge closer to the coast of western Guangdong. It will skirt within 200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong tomorrow morning. Its associated gale winds will affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary gradually. Local winds will strengthen progressively."

The weather forecaster expects heavy squally showers and flooding over parts of the low-lying coastal areas Monday morning. 

Members of the public are advised not to engage in water sports and stay away from the shoreline.
