Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan said on Saturday national security is the prerequisite for and foundation of Hong Kong's prosperous development.
He said officers need to understand the national security law. Chan's comment came at the Hong Kong Police College's passing-out parade.
At the passing-out parade this morning, 30 probationary inspectors and 182 recruit police constables graduated to become members of the force.
Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan officiated at the event as Reviewing Officer.
In his speech, Chan said police officers should acquire a deep understanding of the provisions and spirit of the Hong Kong National Security Law. He said the force should shoulder their responsibilities to safeguard the city's and the residents' future.
Speaking to the media after the ceremony, Police Commissioner Joe Chow said the force's recruitment has seen an increase of 12 percent year-on-year in the first five months of the year.
Chow said a contributing factor to the rising number of recruits is the introduction of the Police Cadet Training Programme -- a diploma of applied education for young people interested in joining the police.
The first batch of students of this programme graduated in May, and about a hundred of them had entered the Hong Kong Police College for foundation training in June.
