Signs at the Pentagon were swiftly changed to say Department of War after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rebrand the Department of Defense.

Workers were seen changing the nameplate on Secretary Pete Hegseth's door, along with signage outside his office and large letters spelling out Department of Defense in the hallway.

The order comes as some of Trump's closest supporters on Capitol Hill proposed legislation that would codify the new name into law.

The Department of War was created in 1789, but was reorganised in 1947 by President Harry Truman.

The Department of Defense incorporated the Department of War, the Department of the Navy and the newly created independent Air Force.
