Israeli forces say they control 40 percent of Gaza City as they continue a military operation to control the area.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes, taking the death toll in almost two years of bombing to more than 64,000.

Nine children were killed in the strike. Two of them were the children of Maha Afana, who lost a son and a daughter.

I felt as if it was raining on our tent, and then I found my son and daughter, she said. What did those children do to the state of Israel?

Dozens of deaths across the strip, most of them in Gaza City as Israel's military continues its operation in the region.

An IDF controlled explosion in Gaza City's Zeytoun district takes out dozens of buildings.

A military spokesman said Israel controlled 40 percent of the city and that the operation would continue to expand and intensify.

Israel plans to take over the most populous Palestinian city, home to around a million people, many of whom have already been displaced multiple times.

The United Nation's children's unit UNICEF says the already famine-strickened city is bracing for a catastrophe.

"Gaza City, the last refuge for families in the northern Gaza Strip, is fast becoming a place where childhood cannot survive," said Tess Ingram, of UNICEF. "It is a city of fear, flight and funerals. The world is sounding the alarm about what an intensified military offensive in Gaza City could bring. A catastrophe for almost one million people who remain there."

In Jerusalem, dozens of protesters blew shofars, a traditional instrument made from a ram's horn, outside the residence of Israel President Isaac Herzog.

They questioned the president's role in pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach an agreement to release the hostages.

Herzog on Thursday met Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic palace in the Vatican. The pontiff and his top diplomats told Herzog that a two-state solution was the "only way out of the war," as the Vatican called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages and entry of humanitarian aid.

Israel is being accused of abandoning the two-state solution by their actions in Gaza and the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank.
