The Mexican government is reportedly planning to increase tariffs on imports from China and other nations that do not have trade deals with Latin America's second largest economy.

It would be part of "Plan Mexico," a bid to boost domestic industry under threat from the Trump administration's trade salvo.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that China is among countries that will be hit by the new levies, but she didn't specify which products or sectors could be affected.

According to a Bloomberg report, Mexico is also weighing on the possibility to increase tariffs on some Asian countries, including China, in its 2026 budget proposal due this month.

The planned hikes would cover a wide range of products such as autos, textiles and plastics, with the aim of protecting local businesses from the impact of foreign products at low prices.
