Organiser of the city's International Hot Air Balloon Fest on Thursday announced a ban of passenger rides about 30 minutes before the opening of the event.

The four-day International Hot Air Balloon Fest was held at Central Harbourfront, showcasing different shapes and sizes of aerostats.

Each sunset adult ticket costs 880 dollars to see the exhibits, while an extra 580 allows customers to enjoy a few-minute balloon ride.

But the organiser called halt to the rides on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, the government said the organiser had conducted an on-site hot air balloon demonstration in late August but results were unsatisfactory.

The government said a second test took place on Wednesday and was approved by relevant authorities, allowing balloons to be displayed. However, the approval does not include taking on passengers.

Authorities said safety comes first in the approval process.
