Police said they would continue to actively use Hong Kong's National Security Law for future prosecutions. This came after the verdict of the city's second United Nations anti-terrorism trial was delivered.

The first seven defendants of the bombing plot case were acquitted of conspiracy to commit bombing of prescribed objects -- an offence under the city's United Nations anti-terrorism law.

It is also Hong Kong's second UN anti-terrorism trial.

Speaking to the media after the verdict, police stressed that they had provided sufficient evidence to the court. The force said they would actively use the Hong Kong National Security Law in the future to optimise prosecutions.

A senior counsel said the public should trust the rule of law.

RONNY TONG, Senior Counsel:"I think we should not start off with the premise that we should get people convicted. People should only be convicted if the law requires them to be convicted. In other words, the legal requirements set up by law are met. One cannot judge the result of one case, or two cases, or a few cases, and then immediately jump to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the law."
