European countries are stuck between a rock and a hard place as a coalition of countries meets in Paris on Thursday to discuss security guarantees for a postwar Ukraine.
The Russia-Ukraine war rages unabated, with no ceasefire in sight and the crucial question of American involvement in ensuring Ukraine's future security remains unresolved.
Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskky has met the leaders of Denmark and France and is expected to have a one-on-one meeting with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Paris on Thursday.
Tracey Furniss reports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy while in Denmark Wednesday said that Trump told him he would decide in a couple of weeks on next moves in the days after he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "We spoke that by United States' pressure he (Donald Trump) can put Putin to the political negotiations. Diplomatic format of dialogue, not the dialogue by weapons. And if Putin will not do it, he said, I asked him to put sanctions, tariffs, any pressure what you can on Russia, otherwise he will never stop this war."
Zelenskyy's next stop was Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron greeted him Wednesday evening ahead of Thursday's meeting with a coalition of European leaders.
Macron said, "We are ready, we Europeans, to bring security guarantees to Ukraine and Ukrainians the day a peace deal is signed. The question now is about the sincerity of Russia and its successive commitments since it proposed peace to the United States."
While in China this week, the Russian leader expressed approval of Trump's leadership and desire to find a solution to the conflict. Putin said, "It seems to me that there is a certain light at the end of the tunnel. Let's see how the situation develops. If not then we will have to solve all the tasks set before us by force of arms."
Meanwhile Russian troops are closing in on the city of Kostiantynivka in eastern Donetsk, home to 67,000 people who are now fleeing the city.
And Ukraine's emergency services responded to an overnight Russian drone attack in Odesa Thursday which caused a fire in a warehouse and damaged a cargo truck
Over 40 firefighters and volunteers were involved in extinguishing the flames. No one was injured.
