The Immigration Department arrested eight mainland illegal workers suspected of providing photography and makeup services in Hong Kong. Five of them have been sentenced to two months in prison.

The Immigration Department said that during patrols on social media platforms, they discovered mainland photographers and makeup artists advertising services, claiming to offer various photography and makeup services in Hong Kong.

At the end of last month and the beginning of this month, officers conducted an undercover operation by posing as customers to book the services. They arrested one man and seven women, aged between 19 and 39, who were mainlanders providing services in Hong Kong as tourists.

The Department said these photographers charged up to HK$2,000 and would accompany them at tourist attractions such as theme parks, while makeup artists could charge as little as HK$80 per session.

Two Hong Kong residents who collaborated with the illegal workers in providing services were also arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting violations of their conditions of stay.

The Immigration Department said most of the arrested individuals were self-employed, but they will investigate whether there are any instigators or employers behind the services.
