Indonesian police have reportedly fired tear gas into crowds of protesters near two universities in Bandung Monday night but did not enter the campuses.

Meanwhile, armed soldiers are patrolling the streets of Jakarta after a wave of violent protests swept across Indonesia, leaving at least eight people dead.

Angry protesters in several cities set fire to regional parliament buildings and police headquarters.

They also damaged infrastructure in the unrest that soon led to looting and the burning of vehicles.

President Prabowo Subianto ordered security forces to take firm action against the protesters.

The protests stemmed from reports that members of the House of Representatives were given on top of their salaries a monthly housing allowance that is nearly 10 times the minimum wage in Jakarta.
