The value of total retail sales in July rose by 1.8 percent compared year-on-year, marking the third consecutive month of increase.

July's total value of sales is provisionally estimated at 29.7 billion dollars.

With the book fair and Ani-Com & Games during the summer holidays, the value of retail sales of books, newspapers, stationery and gifts saw the most marked surge, up more than 20 percent.

That's followed by Chinese drugs and herbs, rising over 19 percent.

Footwear, other clothing accessories, furniture and fixtures also saw notable declines.

A government spokesman says looking ahead, local consumption sentiment should remain steady and the government's efforts in promoting tourism and mega events will benefit retail businesses.
