The Hetao-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone is set to open its Hong Kong section around the end of this year. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology confirms plans to establish new laboratories there.

HKUST says while core tech development efforts will remain in Hong Kong, the Hetao site will focus on product transformation.

The university already runs a Shenzhen-based research institute with 17 labs, collaborating with more than 20 companies including Huawei, and securing 46 patents to date.

Among the projects is a nano-coating tech that makes building exteriors heat-resistant and self-cleaning, being used at Hong Kong Disneyland and HKUST buildings.

With new Hong Kong facilities opening soon, HKUST aims to deepen cross-border collaboration and tap Hetao's advantages in funding, talent and data flow.
