Hundreds of students gathered in major Indonesian cities defying fears of a crackdown after deadly riots on the weekend left eight dead.
President Prabowo Subianto made some concessions over politicians' pay and allowances that sparked riots last week.
He will revoke a controversial 3,000-U.S.-dollar housing allowance for lawmakers which is 10 times more than the country's minimum wage.
Subianto acted after protests turned violent.
The leader has ordered the police to investigate those incidents but also said security would be stepped up telling his forces to take strict action against acts of vandalism and looting.
The crisis forced Subianto to cancel a trip to China to view the military parade this week.
