German Chancellor Friedrich Merz speaking on German television at the weekend said Ukraine should never surrender to Russia as many E.U. countries would be the next victim of Russian aggression.
This as the U.S. ambassador to NATO said his country is giving Ukraine deeper strike capabilities to defend itself from Russia.
Meanwhile, a Russian aerial attack in southern Ukraine killed at least one person and injured dozens more.
Speaking on German television, the German chancellor empathised that supporting Kyiv's defence is an absolute priority.
He said, "We are trying to end the war as quickly as possible but certainly not at the price of Ukraine's capitulation."
In recent months, Western nations rallied behind a renewed diplomatic push to bring the nearly three-year-old war to an end, but Ukraine's allies have accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet in peace efforts and avoiding serious negotiations as Russian troops move deeper into the country.
Matt Whitaker, U.S. Ambassador to NATO said: "President Trump is making sure, one, that Ukraine can continue to defend itself, and by giving them some deeper strike capabilities that obviously could help them offensively. They've already taken out about 20 percent of Russia's oil refining capacity in the last month. The second thing is that we are talking with the Russians. That was not happening during the Biden administration."
Meanwhile, Russia launched a mass attack on southern Ukraine. Among other locations hit, the assault struck a five-storey residential building in the southwestern Zaporizhzhia region, killing at least one civilian and wounding 28 others.
