President Xi Jinping today chaired the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State in a record-sized summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which brought together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of eight other nations in Tianjin City.

Hailing the groundbreaking achievements in the organisation's development, Xi expressed China's willingness to work with member states in fields such as artificial intelligence, while urging the SCO to uphold fairness, justice and regional peace.

He was cited as telling the assembled leaders: "We must promote a correct historical perspective on World War II, and oppose the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation and bullying practices."

The Chinese supremo has called for safeguarding the UN-centered international system, and supporting the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core.

Xi stressed the need for aligning development strategy among the bloc. He added member states should promote the high-quality implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, leverage the strengths of their mega-sized markets and complimentary economic partnerships, and improve trade and investment facilitation.

He also announced new Chinese initiatives, including 100 "small yet beautiful" livelihood projects in member states in need.

China has pledged 2 billion yuan in grants to SCO members, and will issue an additional 10 billion yuan in loans to the member banks of the SCO Interbank Consortium over the next three years, in a bid to provide stronger underpinnings for security and economic cooperation.
